"I thought that the "home crowd" would prefer he focus on local Iranian stuff (particularly the economy) rather than international grandstanding. No?"

Against the Great Satan? Iran has had more than a generation of the US being the greatest evil in the universe. And the present Iranian government stood up to them, and they blinked. Now granted, that is a rather distorted description of what happened, but there aren't a lot of competing viewpoints.

I am sure there are the religious fanatics in Iran who hate 'the Great Satan'. However, I think there are many people like Mani's family.......people who are more middle class and secular esp. in Tehren. And like Mani's family they have family in the States....esp. in CA. They still talk to each other. I also understand Iranians like all things American. In fact, Iranians assimilated into the CA culture almost as fast as the Asians. Finally, it was just a few years ago that Iranians were demonstrating for democracy. I find it hard to believe they have changed all that much since then.
