It is critical that our side have always superior technology in weapons, etc. Behind the scenes, western leaders have policies as to what may or may not be traded. Sometimes nations trade more than we should like and thus we have the carrots, sticks, sanctions, etc. that serve to prevent full-scale war.

For example, Russia has become a cesspool of greed and survival tactics. The oil pipeline which was in private russian hands and which Poland relies on as a lifeline was taken over by the Government and then the prices were jacked up to inhuman levels. It is a dirty world and we cannot control or police all of it. But we must concentrate on securing resources that are in the National Interest (such as oil and technology) and also securing the security of our allies around the world: both land and people must be protected. One of the most moral and courageous moves of any people in any century was when Maggie protected the sovereignty of a dozen sheep herders in the Falklands. The chance for democracy in Iraq cannot be lost or America may just as well become isolationist and wait for their inevitable death...
