Note how Mr Murphy says that the alternative energy folks shouldn't need subsidies to succeed while his industry takes in billions in tax subsidies... That's true, but get rid of his industries subsidies and it would still be the main supplier of fuel and a huge supplier of energy. Also he might try to argue that all the extra taxes placed on oil and its products mean that the industry doesn't receive a net subsidy. OTOH supporters of those taxes could claim that they effectively are just covering the negative externality of pollution and CO2 emissions from gasoline and oil use.
