The problem is with our concept of Joe6pack -- it is cute but grossly misleading. There are people who cannot save and people who choose not to save. For those who cannot save, it is hard times and no security. For those who choose not to save it is the consumer society lifestyle. There is a lot of anxiety, and some people feel better about themselves when they spend -- even when that spending is self-destructive. I don't know that it is so much Joe6pack as it is the merrygoround at the malls of America. The housing bubble reflects a mindset. The SUV reflects a mindset. Taking a cruise reflects a mindset. Perhaps we should call it SuzzieIpod and JoeLookatMe.
