The Religious Right is not that big a portion of the population. They just are motivated voters. But their influence appears to be waning. They couldn't keep the Republicans in power in the past election. The great beast of the American electorate, the usually indifferent mainstream voters who aren't particularily religious or idealogical one way or another, is finally waking up to the excesses of the Religious Right, and voting to counter the Religious Right's influence. I think Bush's first and only veto of the stem cell research bill woke a lot of mainstreamers in America up to how wacked out the Religious Right and their politicians in the Republican party actually are. If 3% of Religious Righters throw in the towel and 3% of mainstreamers decide they've had enough bullying and insanity from the Republicans towing the line for the Religious Right, it could make a huge difference at the polls.
