"Blacks make up 10% of the population......probably not enough to significantly effect life span statistics."

You are talking facts, now.

The biggest influence on average life expectancy in the US is class more than race. Access to health care is a determining factor, especially prenatal care. Low birth weight among the poor means higher infant mortality and that depresses the average life expectancy among the poor. Lack of health insurance and hence, a reluctance to seek medical care, just drives the nail home.

13.4% not 10%
infoplease.com

TABLE 12B: LIFE EXPECTANCY BY AGE GROUP AND RACE, IN YEARS, 1997

LIFE EXPECTANCY AT BIRTH
WHITE 77.1
BLACK 71.1

All races: 76.5

efmoody.com

13.4% is about 1 in 7.5 (or 2 out of 15)

X=All races life expectancy
Y=Black life expectancy
Z=Non Black life expectancy

2Y+13Z/15=X

(2*71.1) + (13*76.5) / 15 =X

X=75.78

75.78 is too precise, but it should be approximately correct.

So the lower life span of black people would lower the average American life span by about 75.8 - 71.1 or about 4.7 years. That's using 1997 data, and there is rounding involved, but it would probably have to be at least 4 years and it could be more than 5.

If I did my math wrong I'm sure I'll be called on it, but while I did round off to make it easier I don't think I made any mistake with setting up the equations or doing the calculations.
