You may want to look into a energy audit to see where your house stands.

What improvements can be made to save on heat loss first.

I too have a house built in the early 1950s that needs a new heating system this summer. I currently have forced-air, but expect I'll replace it with gas-fired hot-water. I'll review the geothermal, but I don't think they're much used here. Given my cool climate I have no need to air condition in the summer, and I'm afraid it would slowly build up a lens of permafrost given our cold ground temps.

I'm also going to cost out various insulation upgrades. At a minimum I want to reduce the amount of window glass area, and replace the garage doors. Depending on cost, I might replace all windows and add new siding. I may also remove the original oil-furnace chimney to gain additional space inside the house.
