I think your right in that most people saying "I am a better than average driver" would be referring to better than the median, not the mean. Only a very few would mean the mean in this context. Maybe in other contexts it would be more common, so I don't think the point is totally useless, just not very relevant to the issue it was raised to address.

The point in the response is relevant to a lot of things. I can think of some areas of driving which I think I am above average in, but other areas (parallel parking, and to a lesser extent other low speed maneuvers in tight places) where I'm clearly below average).

I (like 80% of the population <g>) think I'm above average but that's only because I don't put much weight in my weak areas, and also because there are a lot of really bad drivers out there. "Above average" doesn't require you to be all that good of a driver.
