If you can produce the same level or a greater level of goods or services while using less resources (in this case less labor) then you increase productivity. Increasing productivity is the only reliable long term way to continual increase the economic welfare of a the typical person. The process isn't painless. In the short term the change hurts, just as buggy manufactures may have lost their jobs when people started to use the automobile. That's why its called creative destruction, rather then "creative improvement" or something like that.
