Good heavens, suggesting you try volunteering isn't a personal attack! We can all feel better about our fellow man, I have no doubt. No matter how compassionate one is, one can always improve. As for your original question, I don't know which one is the "original" one. Private charity isn't the answer to every social ill. For example, after natural disasters, the military are the only organizations that actually have the resources to be first on the spot with helicopters etc. But surely the aftermath Hurricane Katrina taught you that if you depend on government to take care of you, you will probably wait for a long time. I thought of you this evening as I drove past block after block of housing projects, surrounded by barbed wire fences, no trees, no playgrounds. I have had numerous clients who lived in housing projects whom I had to take care of via house calls because they didn't have adequate transportation. Lots of scary dudes in those places, sitting around waiting to sell drugs at open air crack markets. You never see kids on their bikes, or playing soccer or basketball, only older males, many of them stone-cold predators due to the environment they grew up in, which rewards predatory behavior and rarely punishes it. I'm too old and tough and mean-looking to rape, and nobody wants to car-jack a minivan, so I don't feel too worried, but feel sorry for the children growing up in those environments. If that's all your government-issued "compassion" has to offer, you should feel ashamed of yourself. We can do better without depending on government to do our "charity" for us.
