It is beautiful country, for sure! I really do think that part of my fear of heights is from that Million Dollar Highway....Especially the mountain climb for autos up from Ouray... There was a time long ago that my Dad was driving in the winter, up that very place. It was snowing and icy. All of my siblings and my folks were in the car. The car started to slip. Mom turned around to us in the back seat, and said sternly with "that look".. "NOT a word out of any of you".... The car continued to slip. There was no guard rail, of course. And only an occasional big rectangular piece of rock to guard against going over the cliff. It seemed to us like miles down. It probably was only 1000 or 2000 feet down the mountain, over the cliff. BUT none of us wanted to find out.

We were quiet. Dad eventually got the car turned around (no mean feat on THAT slippery road)....We went back down to Ouray, and back to our Grandparents house...we got to stay there a few extra days. Of course, we kids loved it....It was tough on the adults because of their schedules...
