I have many friends (most of them actually LOL) who say they are 'conservative.' I doubt they are. When we get to the nitty gritty details of various subjects they don't ever seem to have any facts or figures. They have a visceral connection to the idea of 'free markets', 'capitalism versus socialism', 'entrepreneurship', 'personal responsibility' and the like but they have no factual basis for their opinions. They don't know that private health insurance can have 10 times the administrative costs of Medicare or that Social Security is actually a pretty darn good program. They don't know that the 'conservatives' have increased the national debt by over 55% in just half a decade. They don't know about the $8.8B missing in Iraq...and that's just under the CPA which is long gone. They have images of what 'conservatism' is -- yankee self-reliance, work ethic, frugality, efficiency, economic growth, economic and social mobility, etc. --- but they can't actually show how the 'conservative' ideology gets us to any of these things. Big disconnect IMO. I point out these things from time to time but it always leads to a heated argument and I'd rather go eat and drink with my buds. :)
