Phyrrus wasn't trying to defeat indigenous people, at least not directly. He and Rome where fighting over who would dominate the area. The winner (in this case Rome) was quite able to defeated a large number of determined indigenous people.

The issue isn't whether its possible to defeat a determined indigenous people, it was than and is now. One issue is whether its worth it. It was more likely to be worth it in Roman times when land was the primary resource, and when ruthlessness and mass slaughter were more accepted.

In any case its not The US vs. determined indigenous people. Its the US taking the side of the local government who is itself in conflict against the indigenous people. Supporting the local government is quite different then trying to make Iraq in to an American colony.
