Ultratech Swings to 4th-Quarter Loss As Sales Plunge

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Ultratech Inc., which makes equipment used to make semiconductors, on Thursday said weakness in its customer markets led it to swing to a fourth-quarter loss.
The company posted a loss of $6.8 million, or 29 cents per share, compared with earnings of $1.4 million, or 6 cents per share, in the 2005 fourth quarter.

Sales slid 30 percent to $24.7 million from $35.2 million a year ago.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial forecast a loss of 24 cents per share on sales of $24.5 million.

Ultratech said it continues to see weakness in its customer markets, which hurt fourth-quarter results. The company has cut its work force by 10 percent and closed certain sales and service locations to cut costs.

Research and development expenses dipped slightly in the quarter to $6.6 million from $6.7 million, while selling, general and administrative expenses jumped to $9.7 million from $6.9 million a year earlier.

Full-year losses amounted to $9 million, or 38 cents per share, versus $2.3 million, or 10 cents per share, in 2005. Sales dropped to $119.6 million in 2006 from $122.4 million in 2005.

Ultratech shares picked up 7 cents in midday trading on the Nasdaq."
