PolyOne Sees Lower 1st-Quarter Sales As Vinyl Business Slumps

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Polymer materials maker PolyOne Corp. said Friday it expects weaker demand from construction and automotive customers to hurt first-quarter sales.

The Cleveland-based company expects sales to fall by 2 percent to 4 percent from the year-ago quarter's $674.6 million.

"Lower vinyl business demand in North America primarily accounts for this decline," the company said in a statement.

The company expects a double-digit percentage increase in its international sales.

PolyOne did not issue earnings targets, but said lower margins and volumes will significantly cut into earnings from its Oxy Vinyls LP and SunBelt Chlor-alkali Partnership divisions. Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, resin product spreads are expected to narrow due to lower average PVC prices, although chlor-alkali margins are projected to remain relatively strong.

The company plans to report first-quarter results on May 2.
