Not having ever participated or witnessed a stoning, I cannot say for sure. But I do know a fair amount about Islam and Sharia laws. The rules, as I recall, are that the guilty should be buried waist deep (loosely defined: above genitals but below chest) in a pit. The faithful are then to stand a minimum of 20 paces away and through rocks at him. The rocks are to be of such size that will cause pain and damage but not so big to knock the guilty out. I think a typical ordeal is to last around 1 hour. IF the guilty manages to get himself out of the pit and run away, then he is home free. The rules have been known to be abused. Sometimes the guilty is buried upto chest or his/her hands/feet are tied, or is even put in a sack to prevent any chance of escape. Other times (fairly rarely) the pit crew have been bought to use lose pebbles and bury just above the genitals to make it easy for the prisoner to run away. I think someone runs the show and decides when enough stoning has been done. Whether or not he is a doctor, I doubt it.

IMO, living by "God's Rules" is a very stupid concept, given that gods do not live on earth. We live amongst men and we fallow men's rules...but hey, perhaps Bush and Co can change that too.
