If it was a series of Pyrrhic victories we would be taking massive losses.

We are. You are just not considering the spectrum and nature of the losses.

But 21K soldiers are little more than additional 21K confused targets.

Nonsense.

Defend your position. Here's mine. No one believes that 21K more soldiers will make any difference on Iraq. Not even those who say they believe in it actually do. Listen to McCain...he knows it would take at least a couple hundred thousand more to begin to quiesce the country. The iraqi army is completely fractured and can't be relied on. One can't tell friend from foe among it anymore than one can among the population. We don't speak the language. They could be selling us sand in the desert and our folks we would not even know it. It has taken us almost five years to begin to understand the factions there.

And that is only the beginning. After some sembiance of order is established, one has to maintain it...and therein lies the more difficult task. It can't be done unless the people there want it done. And they will not. American soldiers will always be seen as occupying foreigners and enemies against which one's duty is to jihad. More soldiers means an even greater gift to OBL and his like. It is exactly what they want. If our soldiers pull back, then they start killing each other over some idiotic 1400 year old religious dispute.

So you see, it is indeed a phyrric victory to have driven through there in 3 weeks. It is meaningless. It's when our troubles and eventual defeat actually began.
