Have you factored in high inflation? The inflation of the 1970s' through the early 1980's wiped out a lot of savings. Especially considering that the available instruments were pretty limited at the time. It was pretty much impossible to keep any savings ahead of inflation. And, with the stock market essentially flat, even that wasn't a good way to keep ahead of inflation, especially considering the risks.
