DOn't BS. Kerry's point was true issues. Kerry was not going to stop his campaign and spend 100% of his time arguing with lying fat assed nobody A-holes like John O'Neill.

The fact is, smear campaigns work and are almost impossible to defend against so long as the smearers don't give a damn about their own reputations. Which they don't. And as long as there are media outlets which parrot the smear artists lies. Like Fox News and all the rightwing radio shows.

Nomatter what Kerry had done he would not have stopped Hannity-Limbaugh-Fox from covering up for Bush and pushing the smears 24/7.

What we need are laws against smear campaigns. An amendment to the truth in advertising law. But that becomes a free speech issue. So then what? Remember to Rove types, the ends always justify the means. They will literally make up and say anything.
