Physically calming (same reason schizophrenics tend to be heavy cigarette smokers) while simultaneously freeing up their delusional thought processes. In other words, it makes them feel better about their psychoses.

Purely speculative, of course, but I do have some direct experience with a schizophrenic.

That was an interview and didn't have a lot of studies behind it. The other piece posted did and I found it pretty impressive.
