I would note that before we got to be politically correct, and before we imported so many immigrants from violent places most men carried a knife. In earlier years they were on watch chains or a folding knife for cutting rope, eating an apple, we played games with ours in the school yard. Generally your Father gave it to you when you joined cubs. I knew every boy in my class had one, and we never had anyone get stabbed. I still carry one in my back pocket, if I am going off the property. I have never had an occasion to stab anyone in the 50 odd years I have had one in my pocket. I have opened cans on camping trips and eaten apples and tied grapes and trimmed the odd branch off bushes however.
