A man has been found guilty of stirring up racial hatred during protests against the publication of cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed.

Abdul Saleem, 31, was found guilty at the Old Bailey at the end of four-day trial.

[Saleem said he was repeating slogans 'because everyone else was saying it']

The court was told that the BT engineer was the "cheerleader" of hundreds of protesters at the London event in February last year.

The father-of-five from Poplar, east London, was filmed chanting "7/7 on its way" and "Europe you will pay with your blood".

He was remanded in custody to April for pre-sentence reports.

Rock Tansey QC, for Saleem, applied for his bail to be continued.

He told Judge Brian Barker: "He is a family man with solid roots in his community. This is an act that seems to be out of character."

But the judge said: "I am not prepared in the circumstances of this case to grant bail."

Saleem told the trial that while his words could be seen as "threatening", that was not what he intended and he was repeating slogans "because everyone else was saying it".

Mass demonstrations around the world followed the publication of cartoons in Denmark which depicted the prophet as a suicide bomber.

More protests followed when a number of publications around Europe republished the cartoons.
