Jefferson is also the ONLY guy (we know of) who was Vice President and ALSO paying somebody to slander the sitting President (John Adams).

So...you have to take all his comments and actions in the context of those particular times.

His quote (that you mention) was probably made as a reaction to newspapers that were supporting the Federalist, Adams.

Jefferson was a wise man. Today's print media are probably worse than the papers of his day, but I wouldn't bet on it.
