I think you are wrong, because Jefferson was an educated man, quite able to see through the slant offered by the NYT.

Great men are judged in the context of their own times, and how robust their methods and leadership were. Jefferson's obviously set the USA up as a two ocean power, and captured the natural resources between those oceans.

Bush and Cheney will be judged by history, I think favorably unless the left wing crowd manages to shove its revisionist history down our throats through the likes of the NYT and most of the main stream print media.

If Bush and Cheney seem small next to Jefferson and Adams, they are GIANTS next to anything the left has to offer.

You'd lose that bet. Jefferson would see the river of yellow urinalism emanating from the NY Times and pronounce it the worst newspaper in history.
