Research update:
<Nanophase Technologies reported excellent Q4 results. Sales advanced 52% to $2.17 million, providing a loss of $.06 a share (excluding non cash stock option costs). For the entire year sales rose 32% to $8.99 million. A loss of $.26 a share was reported. Chemical giant BASF accounted for 56% of the annual revenue figure. That contribution increased 13% in absolute terms, fueled by the company's sunscreen product line. Three derivative products are slated for introduction in 2007, laying the groundwork for further expansion. Behr Paints represented 22% of sales. Its NanoGuard line has been delivered to approximately 750 Home Depot locations to date. The rest of the 2,000 store chain will be supplied over the next three months. Re-order rates already are strong at existing locations, indicating a high degree of consumer acceptance.

International sales through BYK Chemie (a subsidiary of chemical giant Altana) are poised to surge in upcoming periods. In addition to paint products that are similar Behr's the company plans to launch a series of coatings and plastics with unique nanotechnology features. Nanophase believes it has sufficient capacity to support a 100% increase in total sales during 2007. But contingency plans are in place to expand volume further in case demand from BYK Chemie builds momentum. Orders from Rohm & Haas for semiconductor cleaning agents temporarily have moderated, but they could surge in 2007, as well.

We continue to estimate 2007 sales will climb 67% to $15 million. Earnings are likely to reach $.05 a share (fully taxed) as Nanophase improves its manufacturing margins and controls overhead costs. Margins have the potential to keep improving in subsequent years. The company continues to encounter no direct competition, leaving it in good position to add new customers in the future. In 2-3 years earnings could reach $.50 a share.>
