I strongly agree with your general point, but

Do folks really think that Hugo Chavez, with command over the tremendous oil sands wealth in Venezuela, would hesitate to exploit that resource if oil prices remain where they are?

With all his nationalization and other economic policies, I think we have to worry about Venezuelan supply going down instead of up.

It really irks me when politicians talk about ethanol as a crude alternative. We need corn for food. Look at the Mexicans protesting over tortilla prices. I'm not shitting you, it's a real disaster to mix the food chain with the energy supply.
