I read somewhere (and can't find it now) that some stadium worker had a heart attack and died on the same day that Gifford took the hit. Someone said something like "he's dead" and Gifford's wife overheard and thought for a moment that her husband had been killed by the hit.

I don't know for sure that this is true, I can't find any confirmation of it.
