Koan, climate change is a problem in & of its self & we should try to mitigate its effects. I would submit that climate change is a manifestation of a far more serious problem that I doubt is humanely fixable. One needs to look at humanities ecological footprint which is currently about 2.2 hectares per person. The average amount of productive ecosystem globally is 1.8 hectares per person. Thus humanity is currently living as if the planet were about 22% larger than it really is. That means Gib is right, we are a disaster to most of the species we cohabit with. It also means that if this trend continues resource wars (forget metals, think food & water) are a certainty. Unless we get our population under control a dismal future awaits. Being optimistic I hope greater efficiency combined with a reduction not just in CO2 but carcinogens etc. will give us a chance. Along with this MUST come a global reduction in resource use which will entail a far greater reduction for ODEC type counties. The Club of Rome report of the mid 60's was correct. Overpopulation is our greatest threat to our continued dominance of the planet.
