The problem isn't with varying opinions; it's the politization of the thread with things that have absolutely nothing to do with the environment. That's where a moderator has to intervene. There are plenty of boards where national politics are "discussed". If it's the environmental thread, stick to environmental issues. It's not like there is a scarcity of them. And that includes, strange as it seem on an investment site, stocks. Riddle me this...what does Nancy Pelosi flying on an AF jet have do with our life support system? That's purely political; there are maybe 10 million zillion threads on SI where that would be germaine. Not here, not at peak oil, not on a hurricane board, not on a football board, whatever.
