Sure, I understand that. Keep in mind that if all you are using is your lifespan, even if it has been a long one, that is still only anecdotal in the scheme of things. The science that has accumulated now includes ice core samples that go back 800,000 years. So that allows scientists to get a much better read on long term cycles. Those cycles have always stayed within a narrow band...within 3 sigma on either side of the mean...until the last 50 years. What's more is that the rate of increase of CO2 content has actually accelerated over the last 50 years. So it would be frightening enough if all you say was a steady trend above the mean plus 3 sigma. That would tell you that you have a new, albeit warmer baseline. But the fact that it is still accelerating, means that the system is wildly out of control, and will be difficult to get back in control.

Any statistician will tell you that means there is a root cause that is abnormal and sustained. Not a big deal when you are talking about big macs messing up your health, because that you can control with a little discipline. But it's a much bigger deal when it's an entire planet of unruly, disagreeable people, for which reaching consensus and mustering the will to act is only just short of a wild dream. Now that is what scares me.

Will this trend make planet Earth uninhabitable within our lifetimes? Probably not. Will the planet warm enough in our lifetimes to make life quite unpleasant? Absolutely. If you have kids, then you should care.

It would be the cheapest to wait 30 years until the global ice age mantra returns...
