But wasn't it also cause for execution under Sunni led, Saddam Hussein Iraq to be identified as a Wahabi?

Saddam actually was just run of the mill, your average Sunni (which is what majority of them are actually) who was nothing like a Wahabi.. He was an equal opportunity dictator and killer in that he had no compulsion to kill Shia or Kurd if they were considered a threat to his power base..

Sunnis or Shias in India for example are quite tolerant of each other.. and even though you will read about shia sunni killing in say Pakistan, that happens when outside influence has manged to sneak in.. Generally, on a day to day basis, you don't see anything like Iraq.. Even in Iran, most minorities go about their business without any one picking on them..

Wahabi is not just a tag you give to a Sunni.. Their ideology is very distinct then mainstream Sunnis.. Unfortunately, most in the west tend to lump every one in one camp.. Saudi Arabia PR has masked the fact that over last 25 years, a lot of oil many given to a lot of muslim countries for settting up schools (madrasas) and mosques, also resulted in mini Wahabis and a lot of intolerant bunch being created.. Top down money fueld Wahabism creating a bottom up Fundamentalist..

Mind you, it might have started innocently enough.. One reasons the current Kingdom have survived is by funelling a lot of money to fringe groups for religious purposes but it has also created a problem that is generally swept under the rug.. You certainly don't hear US pounding on it..

I thought of responding to your description of Shia vs. Sunni but I thought this is not going to go any where.. For now, any distinction between brutalities between parties is just waste of time.. Can Iraq have a functioning democracy or they need another strong man... Well I guess time will tell..

FWIW..
