One whooping crane may have survived Florida storm

MILWAUKEE It's possible that one of a group of whooping cranes feared lost in last week's Florida storm actually survived.

Eighteen of the birds were led south from Wisconsin by ultralight aircraft last fall. They were being kept in an enclosure near Crystal River when the storm hit Thursday night. So far, 17 dead birds have been accounted for.

On Saturday, workers picked up a signal from a radio transmitter. As they moved in on the signal, it stopped, leading experts to theorize that the bird wearing it might be alive and simply flew off.
