It is completely possible to make a basic WCDMA phone without any application processor

Of course, but the operators arent looking for a voice only WCDMA handset. I would be very much surprised if the handset announced by the GSMA doesnt have a camera (VGA or 1.3 megapixel), MP3 playing capabilities, a storage slot and some other multimedia capabilities (Bluetooth?). The question is, who can supply those types of handsets for the minimum price....and that involves an integrated baseband/applications processor as well as minimizing the number of chips handling the transceiver/PM functions.

I have been fairly critical of Qualcomm's WCDMA market share over the last two years. While they talked quite a bit about creating a tiered series of chipsets, in reality, the MSM6250 was pretty much their only offering. Over the last year, I think that this has changed and they now have a product line across the pricepoints. I certainly expect that this should provide the basis for increased 3G share in 2007....and the GSMA gives us a decent 3rd party snapshot of the relative leader at this time.

That is because everybody else is trying to keep 3G as "high end". That is how it is now, but does not really tell what COULD be done.

The operators want lower priced 3G handsets that still have some level of multimedia support. Are you telling me that Motorola is delibarately not selling them these handsets? They seem quite willing to sell sub $30 handsets so avoiding sales of $100 3G handsets makes very little sense.

I don't want to argue with you.

I certainly hope that isnt the case. I am always hoping to get people on these threads that are willing to disagree and provide some data on why.

Comparing apples to apples: WCDMA and CDMA costs are pretty much the same. WCDMA has a little bit more complex BB but easier RF. CDMA often requires AMPS and WCDMA GSM. But the real fact is that the cost of the air interface is becoming smaller and smaller part of the total phone cost (which is by the way one of the reasons why Q business model is challenged).
