re: Almost every foot soldier interviewed during a week of patrols on the streets and alleys of east Baghdad said that Bush's plan would halt the bloodshed only temporarily. The soldiers cited a variety of reasons, including incompetence or corruption among Iraqi troops, the complexities of Iraq's sectarian violence and the lack of Iraqi public support, a cornerstone of counterinsurgency warfare.

I wonder how these guys feel risking their future for a lost cause?

I think for those who understand, its pretty depressing. However, I suspect a lot don't get it.....most of them are from small, rural communities, or the inner city, and are not very well educated and/or informed.

Last week on the local news, they had a mother of a soldier who was killed in Iraq. They live/d in a small town in rural Washington state. When he was 18....two years ago, he came to her and said his life lacked direction and he thought about joining the Marines. She thought that was an excellent idea and encouraged him to join......she was vaguely aware of the war but she didn't think he would have to go. Eight months later he was dead. Only now does she understand how misguided she was. Very sad.
