The 2nd Amendment means every farmer gets a musket. In those days that was important both to feed his family and to potentially rally around to protect the town from English royalists, such as the Bushes are decended from. The founding fathers were also worried about the potential danger of relgious extremists, which is why George Washington and others clearly stated his distrust for orthodox religion (read - evangelical nuts).
