You think the rise of despots around the world has no effect on Americans? Think again. Despotism leads to all sorts of problems that have spill-over effect on the US. 9/11 taught us that much. The question is how do we handle that. Bush's idea is to go on a warmongering campaign against the Middle East. I think that idea is stupid. My idea is to get off the oil successfully, which will spur other countries around the world to follow our lead. That will make it so despotism in those regions cannot flourish with oil money. So people like the Saudi King and Chavez in Venezuela find it much more difficult to rise to power and stay in power. No money = no power. That forces populations to use their intellectual capital in order to get a share of the world's resources. And that means a form of government that is conducive to market dynamics and enterprise, which inevitably means Democracy.
