You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.
Anyone who pays any real attention to weather forecasts knows they are generally worthless when predictions are made longer than 5 days out. Most meteorologists acknowledge things get dicey more than three days ahead, but they are pressured by their advertising-driven bosses and commercial clients to often reach beyond.

That said, why would anyone turn to a meteorologist for his opinion about Global Warming? The know-nothing naysayers love to point to short term weather swings as proof that Global Warming is not happening. This is like consulting a day trader for long term investment advice. Different animal, different measurements and completely different time frames. A day trader might tell you “better sell all your stocks because we had a sharp selloff on fairly strong volume after lunch.”

Which is roughly equivalent to a meteorologist telling you there is no Global Warming because it has been unseasonably cold in Chicago this week.

Climatologists and atmospheric scientists are the people to consult about Global Warming. The same folks Al Gore mentions in his powerful lecture on the subject. These people look at long term atmospheric readings, analyze prehistoric layers in subsoil, measure carbon absorption and loss in ocean floors over decades. And monitor global temperatures on a decade-to-decade basis, not on a weekly or even a monthly basis. Nearly all of them agree Global Warming is occurring, is a serious problem and needs to be dealt with by responsible human beings for the health of the planet.

Many day traders are good at making quick money, and many meteorologists are excellent at forecasting short term weather trends based on current activity. But most people in their right mind would not consult them for long term predictions on the economy, the stock market or the atmospheric health of our planet.

That is an interesting synopsis of the cyclicality of fear mongering and economic opportunity.

One thing is clear to me and to many others: We cannot afford to make rash moves based on conjecture. The fact that solar activity increases can reasonably account for most if not all temperature increase should embarrass the global warming zealots.

The most emphatic seem incapable of embarrassment.
