We were the product of the age of enlightenment. Jefferson was very hip to that and I'm glad. He was at the crest of a human evolution in consciousness and the government of the United States was fertil ground. I find it unfortunate that the evolution of thought and consciousness ended with that era. I figure if people like him would have continued in power we would be a much more enlightened people today. Instead we have reshaped the accomplishments of the founding fathers into stale dogma.

Democracy is but one of the ingredients that made us who we are. I agree there is too much emphasis placed on the word and that the word itself is often abused.
