I have to believe that when a group of people are denied freedoms and they live in poverty, they become very suseptible to cult-like groups like Al Qaeda filling their minds with a bunch of non-sense."

The 9/11 terrorists came from privileged, world-travelling, wealthy Saudi families. Most of them had voluntarily fought the Soviets in Afghanistan on jihad THERE. Think again.

Americans don't want to hear that. They want to believe that the people who did 9/11 are nuts from living in poverty and oppression. They conveniently forget that bin Laden is from one of the wealthiest families in Saudi Arabia and is well educated. They want to believe that America's interventions in the ME had nothing to do with it. They want to think that colonialism and all the over ~isms that swept over the region had nothing to do with it. They want to think that creating Israel was a good thing, not a bad thing. They would be wrong.

In fact, all of those events have created the ideologues that populate the ME. These ideologues are not crazy in the same way as someone who is bipolar. That's the unpleasant reality.
