<<For those that are in the 'do something' camp;
just what exactly should we be doing/contemplating
to mitigate GW effects and what are the risks of
unintended consequences from engaging in such
activities ??>>

I have been in the "do something " camp for years.
The "do something" camp reduces monthly bills, so, puts money in my pocket.I do not have to concern myself with global warming ..my first priority is selfish..ME!

Install compact florescent light bulbs everywhere you can. This returns 75 Percent.
Double insulation on anything that needs heating or cooling , if you can,and lobby government to wave taxes on insulation and energy efficient door and window replacements.
Wash clothes with cold water.
Replace cloths washer with front loader model.
Use a clothes line for drying.
Forget about the care and maintainance of a lawn, plant trees and shrubs or install astro turf instead.Plant a vegetable garden.

Replace water guzzling toilets with Australian Caroma 3 litre 6 litre flush...3 litre over 90 percent of the time.
Replace all inefficient appliances with efficient models.
Install hot water on demand water heater.
Drive a 4 cylinder car and lobby government to wave all taxes on 4 cylinder cars..hybrid and electric.
Consider installing a small solar.. wind system, to get the feel for it, and then expand.
Get an "in your face" hydro meter one that you can easily see.

Compare your monthly bills with neighbours, as you watch your payback.
There are no risks or unintended consequences as all of the above have pay back, and are desirable,if you sell.<g>

Y'all are acting like dealing with this is akin to a root canal without anesthetics. And you, with all the time you spend at TOD (and I need to get back there) should know better.
I live in the 5th or 6th or 7th largest economy in the world, depending on what day of the week it is. Yet, look at our consumption of electricity...that gap you see there is money in my pocket you don't have in yours.

"Since 2001, California has bounced back, fashioning a new framework of utility regulations that places greater emphasis on efficiency than ever before. Through 2008, utility companies plan to spend $2 billion -- a record for any state -- to help Californians save energy. The investment will yield a net gain of $3 billion in economic benefits for the state by reducing utility bills. "This efficiency campaign will avoid the need to build three large power plants," says Brian Prusnek, a senior staff member at the California Public Utilities Commission. "In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, that's the equivalent of taking 650,000 cars off the road. How many other investments yield a 50 percent financial return and reduce pollution?" "

I think we are 12th in GHG emissions, but we are working on that. Lots of programs at the state level, worked out between an R gov and a D lege. Detroit doesn't like us much :>) Only about 10 states have recycling. That, by itself, saves a tremendous amount of energy and emissions. That's easy to do, provides jobs.

"It really doesn't hurt," he said, getting up to see if he was making electricity despite the rain.

10 silver BBs...replaces 100% of electricity, 50 % of transportation fuels in 15 years. If I have added their numbers correctly, cuts all GHG and 13 mil BPD of oil...
