What you see as "soft" I see as strong.

Politeness, especially in the face of rudeness, takes moral fibre and great strength of temper. I think almost every human has a natural impulse to call people names, when they get called a name, but people who want to develop character will resist those more ignoble impulses

You do not counteract "Swiftboating" by become a Swiftboater yourself. That just makes the public arena a sewer. You counteract such methods with a vigorous application of logic, a clear and open airing of the facts, and upright behavior. that is not a failure to respond- that is a response with dignity and logic. If you become what you despise on the way to "winning", what's the point? Might as well vote for the thing you despise to begin with, and save yourself the battle.

Speaking for myself and this thread, our goal is to rise above the pissing matches and not waste our time in sandbox brawls with knee-jerk ideologues. That's not what won the 2006 elections for Democrats; it was putting forth a sensible centrist message that responded to the popular agenda instead of ideological BS.
