A couple of mines now where I am and out of 278 new people 90 of them will be paid in 6 figures I am told?

Good for them I say, it is tough work.

I think training centres are urgently needed. I talked to Catarello about that, and he was not up to it, having decided to stop fighting these battles at Haileybury whose mining tech department was getting buried by Northern. Everybody is short professionals, labourers and tradesmen. The late 90's did everybody in. To establish a training program at mines and affiliate it with a school would require about 2 megabucks minimum. I don't know if the gov. is into it. You would think the majors would chip in.

I don't think common core training fills the gap properly. You cannot train an all around miner in that short a time.

One of the vacuums is the university departments in engineering and geology, well filled in the 80's are going wanting. Domestic students are not there anymore. Geology has been seen since then as boom bust and low pay. This has changed but the interest it still not there for the up and coming. We have to face that in 1980 there were 300 mines in Canada, and now there are 80. Government support for the industry is not there. Unless you were willing to go overseas and speak Spanish, steady work has not been in the cards.

It may be a dry spell for a while.
