<protecting oil supplies and routes is all we can realistically hope to achieve> That might explain the recent naval carrier group buildup in the gulf. As things go from bad to worse our core economic interests become more apparent. We do not 'need' to control Iraq -- only the oil producing regions and the transport networks. Perhaps plan B will turn out to be 'enjoy your civil war, we will sit back and concentrate on your oil'. Same for Iran -- no need to invade, just maintain tight security for oil -- making it 'our oil' and use air superiority to hobble the rest of Iran. We could call it 'sanctions with teeth' -- the brave new world of 'no fly zones' where no fly means that we will move in and 'help ourselves to your oil'.
