In the case of the Grand Canyon...in principle whatever goes through one into little no wall potty gets carried out - whatever goes into the canyon comes out of the canyon.

I would prefer that people just lift a bit of sod and use that, but perhaps that is just not possible in a heavily used area like the Boundary Waters.
