Re: "If we pulled back to the borders in Iraq, and to Kurdistand and Kuwait.....the battle either would happen, or it wouldn't. In either case..we are better off than we are today!"

EXACTLY correct.

Either main-line option (political settlement among the locals brings peace... or extremists pitted against extremists, degrading the military capabilities, economies, and political popularity of each set of extremists among their populations) produces FAR BETTER results for the West... for the U.S., and Western strategic goals of a secular respect for religious moderation, and Democracy instead of corrupt Autocracy.

We hold the winning cards in our hands... but I fear that the 'dead hand' of momentum... from failed policies, and from ignorance... is thus far preventing us from realizing that VICTORY is possible for our strategic vision --- just *not* in the simplistic manner that was envisioned by the 'neo cons'.

Still... Victory is Victory.

(Who cares if it doesn't come about the exact same way that some think tank nerd *imagined* it would?)

I can live with that SO LONG as we keep a substantial number of SPECIAL FORCES prowling the land in search of El Queida types to keep them off balance until the nation of Iraq is ultimately determined. jdn
