My point was their pay should be raised. 50% turn over? To a libertarian that should be clear evidence that they are underpaid. Other industries will obviously pay them more; the artificial market public sector (government) is keeping their wages below the level of efficiency.

There is so much government involvement that its hard to tell exactly what level would be considered underpaid in the absence of local governments running the show. Also the pay varies between states and districts. Still if there really is 50% turnover a year, that could reasonably be considered an indication that the pay might be too low.

I have some doubts about the 50% turnover. Maybe 50% of new brand new teachers leave during the 1st year or don't come back for the 2nd, but I don't think 50% of all teachers leave each year. In fact I'm almost 100% certain that isn't true.

Edit -

"Almost one-half of beginning teachers leave teaching within the first five years. Each year approximately one-fifth of all teachers nationwide decide to leave the school at which they are teaching. "

That's might be just for Arizona, but I don't image Arizona is all that much better than the rest of the country.

So that would make turnover 20% (and not 20% leaving the field, but 20% leaving a specific school, many of them might teach at other schools). Still higher than I expected.

And the 50% figure would be for NEW teachers, over FIVE years, not all teachers over 1.
