"Why would you think they were enemies?" Saddam and Iran?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Er... because they WERE. Saddam and his Sunni tribe's own power base was reliant upon keeping the majority Shiite population of Iraq DOWN, under his boot heel. Iran's Shiites threatened that. In fact, Iran's Persians have long threatened the Arabs' hold over Mesopotamia. Then... there was the little matter of Saddam killing over ONE MILLION Persians (and force conscripting his own Shiites into being battle-fodder for his campaign) during the eight year long Iran/Iraq Gulf War... and his using poison gas (mustard gas) against the Iranian massed forces in the Basra campaign. Then there is the matter of the US and Western (not to mention Soviet) powers nearly universally considering Iraq as the main regional bulwark against Iranian regional aspirations. The floodgates to which, we have now opened....
