If the current crop of US citizens had to go back in time and replace the Americans of that era, we would have lost WW2. We are far more sensitive to the casualties on all sides and the destruction of modern weaponry. I am not saying thats a bad thing in human terms, but when you are fighting a mortal enemy that will use any and all weaponry, strategy and tactics, it may ultimately cause our defeat and worse yet our demise.

Oh I know that... but the ethnic issues of Iraq that did not exist in pacified Germany and Japan make any comparisons invalid in my mind particularly since they would still be there even after the rubble.

Yes, I understand...no Iraqis and the hydra is dead, ethnic issues gone, but we did leave a few Germans and Japanese...but with no ethnic problems.
