what am I missing ?

You miss a lot if you only look at words, not at actions.

Actions speak louder than words.

Not missing anything. When Putin says they'll take relevant measures, it means they'll build some defences in the area to counter the threat and they'll put pressure on elsewhere such as introducing a pipeline tax to reduce hydrocarbon flow to places which are threatening.

When Achminedinjad [that Iranian president - if he'd call himself Smith or Jones it would be easier] says they'll blow up Israel and that because Israel is so small that a few nukes would get it all while the response couldn't obliterate all of Iran, and in Islamic Jihad, martyrdom is an excellent idea, we should take take him at his word.

Islam is about martyrdom, jihad and conquest. Putin is not.

<- when the president of russia says something, its construed as 'just talk'
- when the president of iran says someting, its interpreted as hostile.

what am I missing ?

Whether we like or not, We the Free [read Serfs] are in a holy war. One can't choose not to be in a war if somebody decides that you are going to be in a war, whether you like it or not. Genghis Khan didn't send a scout ahead to ask who wanted to be attacked. Adolf's panzer divisions didn't tell France they were going to skip the Siegfreid line and request permission to invade Poland. Japan arrived in Singapore uninvited.
