Iraqis are just people and, tribal or not, Muslim or not, sectarian or not, they are looking for what most people look for: peace, stability, jobs, schools and what passes for general happiness in this world.

That's probably true of most Iraqis.

That was also probably true of most Lebanese, during their civil war.

It was probably true of most Serbs, Croats, Bosnians, Kosovars, etc when the Balkans descended into genocide.

Probably true of most Rwandans, Congolese, Somalinas... how long a list do you want?

What "most people" want doesn't always matter: if enough people have weapons and see a reason to kill each other, most people get a mess whether they want it or not.

Many Iraqi Sunni want "peace, stability, jobs, schools and what passes for general happiness in this world": but they don't think they can have them unless they maintain political control.

Many Iraqi Shi'a want "peace, stability, jobs, schools and what passes for general happiness in this world": but they don't think they can have them unless they assert themselves over the Sunni, who were so recently persecuting and killing them, and seizing the wealth of their territory (a bit of wish fro revenge in their too).

Many Iraqi Kurds want "peace, stability, jobs, schools and what passes for general happiness in this world", but they don't think they will get them as long as they are a minority in a state run by Sunni and Shi'a, neither of which they have any reason to trust.

And so on...
